During your stay at Hôtel Au Chasseur, a must-see destination awaits you, just 20 minutes from Birkenwald: the town of Saverne, with its majestic Château de Saverne, often dubbed the “Versailles of Alsace”.
This historic monument attracts many visitors every year, enchanted by the town’s rich architectural heritage.
Located in the Bas-Rhin region of France, Saverne is a city steeped in history.
At the end of the Middle Ages, it became the principal residence of the Bishop of Strasbourg from the 15th century onwards, which greatly contributed to its development. As Philippe Zugmeyer, Alsace’s tour guide, explains: “This town developed because it became the main residence of the bishop of Strasbourg, who brought his administration here”.
The Château des Rohan in the heart of Saverne is the former residence of the Alsatian prince-bishops. Today, the interior of the château houses a school, museums and a space dedicated to Louise Weiss, journalist and feminist activist, pioneer of the European idea.
Finish your visit at Château du Haut-Barr, perched on the nearby mountain and offering 360-degree views of the entire region. It also houses one of the last towers of the Chappe telegraph, the first means of communication linking Strasbourg to Paris in the early 19th century.
The Château des Rohan and its surroundings are an ideal stop-off point for enjoying the beauty of Alsace during your stay at Hôtel Au Chasseur.
